Creating a Positive Atmosphere

This is wisdom, being able to make every student feels home .  I think having a clear understanding of each student’s goal can really help a teacher know what to do and say in order to make them feel home or comfortable; Jesus knew His disciples’ goal which is to have eternal life, so He used that knowledge to motivate them. Teaching Deep Culture in Elementary Classroom

June 14/2018 TESOL103 LESSON 8 Why should a teacher teach deep culture? according to Simonton, exposure to cultural diversity is one of the reasons why certain civilizations are more developed than others... The highly creative people, according to Simonton, tended to live in circumstances where different cultures interacted and, as a result, likely rubbed off on each other.” Exposure to cultural diversity may force children and adults to form new neural connections in the brain to be able to sufficiently to interpret meaning... The above lines underline the importance of cultural diversity, but now, my question is  HOW SHOULD TEACH CULTURE IN A DEEPER WAY? ARE THERE STEPS TO FOLLOW?

Culture and Psychology

June 7, 2018 TESOL 103 LESSON 7 Culture is somewhat connected or linked with Psychology. The use of subconscious can be more frequent in some cultures more than others. I believe that culture has a significant influence on people. “ The culture into which one is born has a significant effect on one's self-esteem. Because one is born with certain talents, no matter what. And in certain cultures, those talents will be exalted, and in certain cultures, those talents will be minimized or even debased. And so there may be some people who were born in the wrong culture for them.”

Cross-Cultural Students in the Classroom

June 7, 2018 TESOL 103 LESSON 7 "If you have African American students that are being more active in class than your white students, you have to realize it may not be because they're just bad students. It may be because they’re following their paradigms of being very expressive... I f an Asian student is not very participatory, don't worry about that. Because their culture, they're less expressive. They're taught to be very respectful of the teachers, and sometimes that high degree of respect will limit the comments that they may make in class because they're afraid that they might show that they don’t know something that maybe the teacher didn't teach well enough, or maybe they're questioning the teacher's opinion on something. Questioning what the teacher says would rarely be done in Asia. Disagreeing with a teacher would be rarely done. Some Asian students will go so far as to not even look the teacher in the eyes because that would

Difference in Manners

Image
June 5, 2018 TESOL 103 LESSON 7 Manner is the way people according to their culture do things, like covering one’s mouth to yawn, stretching in public, putting one’s hands in their pockets, or blowing one’s nose in public etc. TESOL teachers should be aware of the difference in manners in order to better help their students not hurting one another. I finally realize that teaching is not only helping the learner to know what they did not know before but it is much more than that. A classroom where cultural differences are not taken into consideration will not be a loving and respectful atmosphere, no will pay attention to their classmates, to what can hurt and what cannot etc. Based on what I learned about difference in manners, I feel that I need to pay attention to my students’ culture, difference in their manner of doing thing; I will teach them tolerance and respect for others’ believes and education (view).

Personal Space Differences

June 2, 2018 TESOL 103 LESSON 6 "Personal space is sacred." who does not like privacy?  "Hey buddy... did you realize you're sitting in my seat."   I, personally, really like privacy; that does not mean that I do not like to share... At church, almost every member has a place where they feel more comfortable, some families in my ward seem to have their own spaces/seats; every time they come to church, at the sacrament meeting they choose the same places, and the nicest thing is that no one else will sit in their seats.  I really enjoyed learning about Zone Distances because it will help me a lot in my professional life.  I understand that some people like larger spaces than others which is normal, but it can be dangerous for a disciple of Jesus Christ because those around us may think that we need more personal space because we pretend to be superior and so on.  I ignored those things. Now I am going to pay more attention to as many parad

Individualism Vs Collectivism

May 31, 2018 TESOL 103 LESSON 6 "What is considered an acceptable choice to make in some cultures, might be considered a betrayal, possibly, in other cultures." (the Teacher) I really like being myself. As an EFL teacher I should teach my students about Individualism and Collectivism because they come from different cultures.

Differnces in Emotional Expressivity

May 29, 2018 TESOL 103 Lesson 6 “Emotional expressivity is one of the things that are more easily misunderstood than many other things in cross-cultural differences .” The following lines are my understanding concerning differences in Emotional Expressivity. Emotional expressivity is a very important point, I think, as an EFL teacher, I need to understand and then to make my students understand that their way of interpreting emotional expressivity might be wrong and that they must be careful when it comes to deal with this kind of question. I learned from the lecture that there is private and public showing emotional; that is very true because the way of expressing our emotions when we are in our personal room is not the way we do when we are in public.   “And studies have showed that in private we all express our emotions in a similar way. But in public, we're very dissimilar in the way we express our emotions. For example, a study was done in a classroom showing t

Cultural Miscommunication

Cultural Miscommunication could be very dangerous.  Based on the lecture miscommunication can cause wars, muders, sexual assaults, and many other difficulties. A simple reaction can be interpreted rude by people that come from another country; giving a red flower to a Chinese can be interprted differently by people coming from a different part of the world. As an EFL teacher, I must make sure to be aware of Cultural miscommunication so that I can help the students to communicate effectively with their classmates that come from different countries or that have different culture. Thus they will feel free communicating with one another.

Cultural Differences in Concerning Time

May 24, 2018 TESOL 103 Lesson 5 The following lines you are about to read are my understanding about a lecture that a teacher at BYU-Idaho gave in class. Some people think that relationships and family are more important than schedules and/or tasks and procedures; they prioritise family and human relationships instead of schedules, they do not believe that time is more sacred than men, those people are polychronic. In the other hands, mono-chronic people believe that schedules, tasks, and procedures are more important than human relationships; for those people time is considered sacred. "American businesses have reputation for being cut off from employees morale and not worried about employees. Employees are just means to an end, not like members of the family." ( Edward T. Hall ) Professor Ivers said that the schedule is like the holy scriptures for mono-chronic people. As an EFL teacher I need to understand cultural differences in concerning time so that I treat

Cultural Paradigms

May 23/05/18 Lesson5 TESOL 103 About Cultural Paradigms “Two different people from two different cultures can witness the very same event…they are going to match them up with different paradigms with different interpretations. And so the very same-- the two people can see the very same event and if they are from different cultures they can interpret it very differently. ” The following lines are my understanding about Cultural Paradigms based on the readings. Paradigm is based interpretation, which means the same concept, object, or behavior will be interpreted differently from a culture to another. The paradigms we have in America are not the same in Africa, Asia, or Europe. A given behavior could be considered normal or polite in the US but considered rude and impolite in China.       The professor said, “Two different people from two different cultures can witness the very same event…they are going to match them up with different paradigms with different i

Response to “Is The Great American Teacher Dead?"

TESOL Lesson 2 May 3, 2018   Response to “Is The Great American Teacher Dead?” Cris Carrasco “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitious. Small people always try to do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too,  can become great.”  ( Mark Twain) I Learned so many things from the article that I don't really know what to share with you guys! The story told was about Demosthenes who was struggling to be good at Public Speaking, he claimed that even drunkards and illiterate people were better speakers than him, but with Satyrus's help and demonstration, he was convinced; the experience he had convinced him of the overwhelming importance of delivery and set him a speaking career that would bring him everlasting regard and put him on the intellectual map for millennia.             I also learned from the article that Public Speaking and teaching are cousins. At the core of both is communication. I learned that education is more than
